Orientation FAQs

Have questions about New Student Orientation? From attendance to registration to formats, this FAQ list covers the basics of what you need to know. Check out the categories below to find out more, and don’t hesitate to contact us if you need further assistance.

What is new student orientation?

New Student Orientation is an essential step in your transition to becoming a student at San Jacinto College. This orientation will allow you to meet other new students, current student leaders, and staff. You will leave orientation with the information necessary to be successful at San Jac. After you complete orientation, you will be able to meet with an advisor to determine your class schedule.

Can I still attend if I am not required?

Yes; however, you must contact the Orientation & Campus Tours Office instead of using the online sign-up system.

How much does orientation cost?

It’s free!

How do I reserve my spot?

You must reserve your spot for orientation through your Student Online System (SOS). Once you log into SOS, will see a pop up with prompts to follow so you can select your orientation session.

What are the dates for new student orientation?

The available dates are listed on the Secure Online System (SOS).

Who can accompany me to orientation?

Space is limited, so we ask you to refrain from bringing guests, including parents and children.

Is orientation mandatory and who is required to attend?

Yes, orientation is mandatory for all first-time college students, including previous dual credit students. Transfer students with less than 12 completed credit hours must complete an online orientation.  ESOL students must attend orientation once they complete their language program. International students (F-1 visa) must also attend orientation and a separate orientation specific to international students.

When should I complete a new student orientation?

Once you have been accepted to San Jac, apply and submit your placement test scores. After the orientation, you will be ready to register for classes.

Do I have to sign-up before I attend?

Yes, you have to reserve your spot through your SOS account to attend orientation. Walk-ins are not allowed.

Can I register before I attend orientation?

No, there will be a hold on your registration account until you have attended orientation.

How long is orientation?

Orientation lasts 1.5 hours. You must be present for the entire program.

What if I need to reschedule an orientation session I signed up for?

You may reschedule your orientation session by signing back into SOS and choosing the reschedule option.

What if I cannot attend an entire orientation?

You will need to make sure to attend the entire orientation session to get the hold released. If you will be late or need to leave early on that date, you need to choose another orientation date.

I will be on vacation during on-campus orientations, can I still sign up for classes and do my orientation after the semester starts?

Since orientation needs to be completed before you can register for classes, we have an online option that you can sign up for in SOS.

Can I take orientation online?

While we encourage you to attend a campus orientation, there is an online orientation available for those who cannot make it to an on-campus session. The online option can be selected in your SOS account.

What will we cover in orientation?

College policies, terminology, technology, resources, and success strategies.

How do I check what session I signed up for?

You will receive an email to your San Jac email account and the email account you used to complete your application. The email will contain all the information about the orientation session you signed up for.

When will my hold be released so I can register for classes?

The hold will be released at the end of campus orientation. After you complete orientation, you will be able to visit with a program advisor and register for classes.
