Teacher Training

STEM EduCasts:

September 1-November 30, 2008

These EduCasts are designed to enhance teachers’ awareness and knowledge of space-related topics and enable them to return to the classroom well-equipped to teach these topics to their students. There are six EduCasts, all of which are available online so that teachers are able to complete the session at a time and place of their choosing. Each EduCast presentation is about 40 minutes in length. After viewing an EduCast and creating an accompanying classroom lesson plan, the participant is eligible to receive 8 hours of Professional Development/Continuing Education credit units through San Jacinto College.

“A Boost to Space: Newton’s Laws of Motion”

  • Review and examine the three laws of motion
  • Explore how the laws of motion differ on Earth and in orbit
  • Review and experience hands-on classroom activities that reveal the influences of Newton’s laws
  • Discuss additional student hands-on activities that reinforce the laws of motion

“Rocketry for Educators”

  • Explore the history and science of rocketry
  • Discuss the impact of rocketry on science and the importance to the nation
  • Discuss pioneering rocket scientists and their contributions and accomplishments in rocket science
  • Examine actual flown spacecraft and showcase their accomplishments

“Space Geography”

  • Discuss how satellites are giving humans access to information with a whole new perspective
  • Examine how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has many uses from studying global warming trends to the U.S. Census Bureau to law enforcement
  • Demonstrate classroom activities that utilize GIS and GPS technologies
  • Review teacher classroom resources for GIS/GPS
  • Review GIS/GPS careers

“BioReactor”

  • Explanation of what a bioreactor is and how it works
  • The benefits of using a bioreactor system
  • Examination of how to use a bioreactor in the classroom
  • Demonstration: How the bioreactor works
  • Demonstration of how to conduct a classroom activity

“BioTech Careers”

  • Exploration of ‘what’ is biotechnology
  • Examine the disciplines of biotechnology in research and industry
  • Academic and career paths in biotechnology
  • View video clips relating to careers and future opportunities from biotechnology professionals and experts

“Human Physiology in Space”

  • Vestibular System, Cardiovascular System, Muscular Skeletal System
  • Discussion and overview of these systems and how they help us on Earth
  • Discuss key changes to each system brought on by the freefall environment
  • Demonstrations

Distance Learning Events facilitated by Space Center Houston

Bring space to your classroom with state-of-the-art video conferencing with hands-on activities from Space Center Houston’s museum floor. There are four distance learning events to choose from:

- History of Manned Space Flight – Take a trip back in time to the beginning of space exploration. Discover what really happened during the space race by exploring Space Center Houston’s Starship Gallery and look forward in time as NASA and Program Constellation send humans back to the Moon and on to Mars.

- Human Physiology in Space – What happens to astronauts bodies in
space? What affect does a free fall environment have on the vestibular system? Experience what the astronauts feel by conducting hands-on interactive experiments. Live from Space Center Houston’s mock up of the International Space Station, your students will discover what it is really like to live in space.

- More than Science – Take a journey back through time and explore the
history and science of rocketry. Students will learn about the impact of rocketry by choosing a pioneering rocket scientist and researching his/her contributions and accomplishments in rocket science. During the distance learning event, students will explore actual flown spacecraft and later showcase their scientist through a creative PowerPoint presentation. Following the event, the Space Center Houston instructor will choose the best presentation and award a prize to the winning team of students.

- Seeing the World in a Whole New Way – Satellites are giving humans
access to information with a whole new perspective and ease. Today, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has many uses from studying global warming trends, to the US Census, to law enforcement. While examining America’s fist satellite Explore, investigate how satellites and Earth observation play a role in your every day life!

All of these are approximately 50 minutes in length and there are no costs – grant funds pay all fees and enrollment as long as you register through the Aerospace Academy with the registration form provided below. There is limited space for these events so please register early so we can coordinate a date and time as soon as possible.
