Student Workshops

2008 Summer Space Sciences Exploration Program

July 28 to July 31 2008

This program will give 20 rising high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to spend four days at Space Center Houston and Johnson Space Center learning about what is like to work in the aerospace industry. The overall goal of this project, which is funded by a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission, is to use the technologically rich and exciting resources represented by the aerospace industry at NASA’s Johnson Space Center to inspire students to become interested in high technology and aerospace fields and to provide them with the necessary foundational skills and knowledge for success in those careers. Students will be able to participate in activities and workshops dealing with robotics, rocketry, astromaterials, aerospace careers, and geographic information systems (GIS), on-site NASA tours (including a tour of the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory), and job shadowing activities.

Students interested in becoming part of this fascinating experience are required to complete an application and submit it along with a parent consent form and a reference letter from a teacher or school administrator.  The letter must state why the applicant should be selected for this program.  Participants will be selected according to their level of involvement and interest in pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering or math fields.

For more information about this program, please contact Joel Soto by email at joel.soto-1@nasa.gov or by phone at 281-483-1138.

To enroll as a participant, please fill out and send the registration form to Joel Soto by fax at 281-483-0435.

Signed reference letters must be faxed by the teacher or administrator and are subject to verification.

Instructions for letter of recommendation

The deadline to send all forms and letters is 5/6/2008.  Participants will receive an email notification by the end of May 2008.
