Texas Workforce Commission Youth in Technology Grant: Careers in Technology Impact Program (C-TIP)

San Jacinto College received a $230,984 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission’s “Youth in Technology” program to assist in increasing enrollment and retention among lower socioeconomic groups and individuals who traditionally do not enroll in post secondary engineering or computer science programs.   San Jacinto College/Aerospace & Biotechnology Academy will collaborate with NASA-JSC, aerospace industry partners, the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership, the Houston-Galveston Area Council and multiple high schools within seven local school districts to bring C-TIP to the target communities.

Attend the 2010 Texas Engineering & Technical Consortium Best Practices Conference 

Conduct outreach to high school counselors in order to explain the C-TIP Program, provide the latest information regarding degrees available in computer science and engineering and obtain assistance with the design of recruitment activities

Establish articulation agreements with Texas institutions of higher education offering degrees in computer science, engineering and related fields

Designate San Jacinto College faculty Core Course Champions from each of the three campuses to promote C-TIP activities and assist with C-TIP Student Ambassador identification

Select high school students to participate in C-TIP Summer Programs

 

Conduct outreach/recruitment activities to encourage C-TIP program participation

 

Recruit, select and provide scholarships to San Jacinto College student participants for the C-TIP Summer Career Exploration Program

 

Conduct 6 San Jacinto College Campus Career Expo Events

 

Conduct C-TIP Summer Career Exploration Programs for San Jacinto College freshmen/sophomores

 

Develop and establish the C-TIP San Jacinto College Student Ambassador Program

 

Conduct the high school C-TIP Summer Space Exploration Programs

 

Develop and implement the C-TIP Career Investigation Blackboard to facilitate monthly, web-based discussions between interested students and career experts

 

Produce and disseminate a DVD Career Series

 

Develop and schedule Distant Learning Network Events with Space Center Houston and/or NASA-JSC to allow students to speak directly with NASA personnel

 

Hire part-time San Jacinto College Student Ambassadors to provide time, service and leadership to current and prospective students and visitors
